Job Description

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) III performs duties to enhance patient experience while maintaining patient comfort and a safe patient environment. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age-specific. All direct patient care is under the supervision of and is delegated by the Registered Nurse according to the guidelines as set out by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Additionally, a PCA III exhibits critical thinking skills in escalating concerns, and has the ability to competently complete delegated tasks without coaching and/or direct oversight.

Responsibilities

Clinical: Performs aspects of clinical care as assigned and instructed by the RN per Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines for delegation. Meets clinical platform of skills guided by the PCA Core Skills Competency Checklist. Also, able to perform the following clinical skills—EKGs, Phlebotomy, Ostomy Care, obtaining Urine Specimen from a Foley Catheter. Maintains patient confidence and protect operations by keeping patient care information confidential. Subject matter expert and/or clinical expert on Unit.

Leadership & Accountability: Demonstrates the top behavioral competencies established by Nursing Leadership for our Patient Care Assistants at an advanced level—effectively communicates with patient and families, peers, other leadership, and new employees as a member of the Unit leadership team, seeks to serve customers and actively seeks new and creative ways to respond to patient demands ,resilient and adaptable to change and helps to manage change on Unit and within peer group, fosters collaboration among the team to solve problems and proactively create solutions, accountable to one’s own actions, communications, development, and accountable to help new PCAs in their growth and development. Leads in Unit councils and/or committees, while also leading CIT projects and/or other initiatives where creative and innovative thinking skills will be exhibited. Proactive change agent. Primary preceptor and mentor, as needed. Consistently called upon to shadow candidates in the interview process. Monitors and supports scheduling and patient workload with leadership. Partners with the Educator on Unit to support and lead the onboarding process for new hire PCAs on Unit.

Environment and Safety: Provides and promotes individual patient and unit safety. Also, identifies, escalates, and provides solutions and acts upon safety hazards.

Comfort: Provides comfort and personal hygiene for patients, documenting according to policy. Redefines and exemplifies the world class patient experience and models the correct behavior for staff in relation to patient hospitality.

Communication: Orients patient & family to the hospital environment & services provided, facilitates communication throughout the entire hospitalization process. Also, leads communication of Unit wide updates & network wide updates to rest of team/coworkers. Responsible to lead in communicating new roll outs or process changes to Unit team and gain buy in from peers on change. Leads the communication to staff on any other progress or updates from Unit or network initiatives. Consistently applies emotional intelligence to all situations and all interactions.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

REQUIRED EDUCATION: HS Graduate/ Diploma or GED equivalent

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 3+ years of experience (pursuing Associate degree and/or some higher education preferred)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: PCA III is proficient in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and EMR.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS :

Certification in AHA Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers ((Not required before or upon hire but required before patient contact.)
