The Genetic Counselor II (GCII) functions as a member of the Precision Health (PH) Clinical team by providing education, training, and consultation for health care providers (HCP) and patients regarding germline and genetic characteristics that influence patient management. The Genetic Counselor II (GCII) will provide counseling to patients referred for hereditary cancer, prenatal/reproductive genetics, hereditary cardiovascular indications, and/or general adult conditions.


The Genetic Counselor II (GCII) functions as a member of the Precision Health (PH) Clinical team by providing education, training, and consultation for health care providers (HCP) and patients regarding germline and genetic characteristics that influence patient management. The Genetic Counselor II (GCII) will provide counseling to patients referred for hereditary cancer, prenatal/reproductive genetics, hereditary cardiovascular indications, and/or general adult conditions.

EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited genetic counseling training program.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of experience as a genetic counselor particularly in oncology, cardiology, prenatal, and/or general adult hereditary conditions.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS:

ABGC Board Certification is required

Genetic Counselor license through the State Medical Board of Ohio or the ability to obtain this license within three months of hire date is required

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Experience in adult oncology, cardiovascular, prenatal/reproductive and/or general adult hereditary conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of human genetics, inheritance patterns, genetic disorders, and risk assessment
  • Ability to interpret genetic test results and communicate findings effectively to patients and healthcare providers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain complex genetic concepts in an understandable way
  • Strong counseling and interpersonal skills to provide emotional support and guidance to patients and families
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including communication and building relationships with other providers.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills for evaluating genetic and medical data
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs, risk assessment models (e.g., Tyrer Cuzick, Gail, Dutch FH)[SW1]
  • Familiarity with genetic databases and variant interpretation tools (e.g., ClinVar, OMIM, HGMD)

In addition to the job responsibilities of a GCI, GCIIs should:

  • Provide education for HCPs through presentations and in-person meetings regarding genetic characteristics that influence patient management.
  • Provide education/outreach to patients through community support programs or community events.
  • Supervise genetic counseling graduate students during their clinical rotation through TCHHN.
  • Assist in creating/updating marketing materials for the Genetic Counseling Program at TCHHN.
  • Assist in quality improvement projects, data tracking (including referral patterns, indications, and test results), and other projects within the Precision Health Clinic .
  • Raises awareness and provides education and training for HCP and patients related to precision health across TCHHN. This includes attending team meetings, tumor boards, and other meetings with providers as requested.
  • Follows all applicable policies, procedures and protocols related to documentation, use of the EMR and effective communication of work completed to enable TCHHN to bill and collect for services rendered.
  • Maintains industry knowledge of leading practices, regulatory requirements and documentation requirements related to genetic counseling and shares those in a timely manner with the organization.
  • Responds timely to insurance denials and requests for information as communicated via the Revenue Cycle process.
