SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: To write/edit grant proposals, manuscripts for publication, Institutional Review Board protocols, conference presentations, and/or other documents as needed.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Grant Writing and Editing
Meet with research staff to gain a thorough understanding of the research project. Describe the broad, long-term objectives, intended accomplishments and hypotheses to be tested in the specific aims. Critically evaluate the existing knowledge and identify the gaps the project is intended to fill. Explain the importance and health relevance of the research. Provide pertinent preliminary studies to establish the experience and competence of the principal investigator. Describe the research design and procedures to be used in detail. Include information on how the data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted. Provide a tentative sequence or timetable. Search and identify potential funding opportunities for the lab. Indicate performance sites and describe capabilities and resources.

Manuscript Writing and Editing
Provides professional writing and editing for manuscripts with the intent that the documents will be published. Identify, read, and synthesize all existing relevant articles on the topic. Attends meetings pertaining to the conduct of the research. State the prospectively defined hypothesis, clinical objectives and planned subgroup or covariate analyses. Accurately describe methods used for the project; study population; inclusion/exclusion criteria; all interventions and their timing; and how the sample size was determined. Describe all outcome measures and the rationale and methods for statistical analyses. Present summary data and descriptive and inferential statistics in sufficient detail to permit alternative analyses and replication. Present the results in logical sequence in the text, tables and illustrations. Discussion the conclusions of the study that are directly supported by the evidence reported, along with implications for clinical practice. State general interpretation of the data in light of the totality of the available evidence. Prepare manuscript in correct format for the journal in which it will be published. The author(s) are responsible for approving the final version and submitting it to the journal.

Stay current with changing regulations and requirements for area hospitals. Describe the short and long range purpose of the project in lay terms. Explain the importance of the study to human health. Provide a concise summary of previous work done in this area. Describe the research plan, including inclusion/exclusion criteria, sample size, age range of subjects, how they will be collected, randomization procedures and a detailed description of the methods to be used. Provide a specific description of the data analysis methods to be used. Justify all special considerations of the study (e.g. blood sampling, radiation exposure, use of investigational drugs and devises). Describe known or potential discomforts or hazards and classify the study according to the risks and

Other Publications, Presentations and Web Content
Conducts literature searches for the department. Interval reports to funding agencies. Develops tables/graphs for poster sessions/oral presentations. Assist with and develop web pages related to the preceding work and others as requested. Assist and consult on scientific content of research proposed and with regard to administrative aspects of the laboratory.

Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field
- 7+ years of work experience in a scientific writing.
Preferred:
- Master's or PhD in scientific field.
- Previous experience writing grants and/or scientific papers for research.
