The Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) are now inviting applications for a Pediatric Residency Program Director. The Pediatric Residency Program currently trains approximately 200 residents with an intern class of about 60 residents, consisting of 42 categorical residents along with residents in highly competitive combined programs in Medicine-Pediatrics, Child Neurology, Pediatrics Medical Genetics, Triple Board (Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, and Pediatrics), and Pediatric Physical Medicine &Rehabilitation (PM&R). The residency program has robust opportunities to support exposure and advanced skill development in advocacy, community health, global health, teaching, quality improvement, and research. Cincinnati Children’s serves as the community hospital for all regional pediatric patients as well as global quaternary referrals, and training experiences range from the provision of primary pediatric care to management of patients with complex and subspecialty care needs.

Key Responsibilities


The Program Director has responsibility, strategic oversight, authority and accountability covering every aspect of pediatric residency education and training (80% effort as Residency Director and 20% clinical effort).

This includes oversight of:

  • Curriculum updates and evaluation
  • Learning environment
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Faculty as teachers, coaches, mentors, advisors, and role models
  • Supervision of residents, including clinical competency and assessment, work hours, and procedures
  • Advocacy/support to ensure resident wellbeing
  • Recruitment and retainment of residents, including combined Pediatrics programs
  • Program management including program evaluation and improvement, communications, ACGME accreditation, program resources, and partnership with institutional GME leaders

The program director must:

  • Serve as a role model of professionalism
  • Design and conduct the program in a fashion consistent with the mission of Cincinnati Children’s and the mission of the program
  • Administer and maintain a learning environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency domains
  • Oversee the Residency Clinical Competency Committee and Program Evaluation Committee and their work products
  • Maintain responsibility for submission of ACGME milestone data, annual program evaluation, Annual Data Submission (ADS), and ACGME faculty and resident surveys
  • Lead the annual recruitment of pediatric residency program applicants, including application review, interview day programming, and selection process, in collaboration with Pediatric Residency Associate Program Directors and administrative team
  • Collaborate with the combined Pediatric Program Directors to recruit applicants
  • Foster the development of state-of-the-art and innovative approaches to training residents
  • Participate in national innovation and study within the pediatric education community, notably within the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) community
  • Be an active member of APPD LEARN
  • Direct implementation and improvements of the residency education curriculum/policies
  • Oversee resident disciplinary or remediation processes and ensure compliance with Cincinnati Children’s GME policies and procedures
  • Submit accurate and complete information required by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME
  • Actively participate in quarterly GMEC meetings
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behavior, and proactively addressing concerns
  • Provide a learning and working environment in which residents are empowered to raise concerns and provide feedback in a confidential manner without fear of intimidation or retaliation
  • Collaborate closely with Pediatric Residency Associate Program Directors to share responsibilities and execute expectations
  • Select and provide supervision and mentorship to the Pediatric Chief Residents
  • Ensure the program's compliance with all ACGME Pediatric program requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • MD or DO degree
  • Meet qualifications for appointment at rank of Associate Professor or Professor with eligibility for appointment as an affiliated faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
  • Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics
  • Two or more years of experience in a residency or fellowship program leadership role
  • Pediatrics expertise and at least five years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee
  • Ongoing clinical activity
  • Must demonstrate interest, commitment, and leadership in education with excellent communication skills
