Our Commercial Auto Line of Business department is currently seeking an underwriting expert that will ensure that the Commercial Auto underwriting skill level is maximized and at the proper level to prevent exposing the line of business to unnecessary peril. The person in this role oversees the Auto Specialist Groups, works with Underwriting Office to make sure education, complex situations, and underwriting oversight is conducted consistently across the enterprise – including Key Accounts, Target Markets, Small Business, Straight Through Processing (STP), and Middle Markets. The expert will work with the line of business director to assist with the implementation of product strategy and initiatives. This position is based at our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio.

Many departments at our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio, offer hybrid work options, empowering associates to work from home several days a week. Depending on your role and responsibilities, hybrid options may be available for those working at headquarters.

Salary: The salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $150,000.00 annually. The pay determination is based on the applicant’s education, experience, location, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Be ready to:

  • support Commercial Lines and Sales as a resource for underwriting expertise. Assist Commercial Lines and Sales associates by fielding referrals seeking direction in the underwriting and pricing of more complex Commercial Auto risks. This will include risk evaluation, technical advice with respect to rules interpretation, appropriate forms, vehicle classification/cost new, state and federal filings, limits management guidance and pricing direction
  • oversee auto and trucking specialists. Assist in approval of new specialists, maintain roster, define roles, coordinate continuing education training (including monitoring emerging risks), lead special projects. Manage trucking risk referral procedure – establish/update procedure as needed, monitor progress, and report results
  • create, monitor and update auto-related procedures and guidelines within the Commercial Lines procedures manual as needed, in conjunction with Underwriting Office.
  • work with the coverage expert, forms expert, and small business expert in a collaborative team manner to create solutions proactively and after the fact that improve the Commercial Auto product relative to other lines of business in the company and other auto products in the industry
  • maintain Central Analysis Bureau (CAB) advantage program. Serve as company contact, coordinate training for Commercial Lines and Sales as needed, and negotiate contract terms at anniversary
  • participate and lead in training for new field representatives, Loss Control representatives, and/or Claims representatives in any Commercial Auto gaps or challenges to the profitability and efficiency of writing Commercial Auto exposures
  • evaluate and approve individual risk filings as referred by underwriters. These include:
    • forms – unfiled forms that must be manuscripted to address unique characteristic of risk
    • rates - deviating from filed rates (Composite Rated Autos or Dereg risks)
    • rules –from which we deviate (example: eligibility for a particular coverage)
  • work with Underwriting Office to manage line of business authority levels and help with the approval process if needed
  • be the touchpoint for Claims in Commercial Auto product – including offering guidance, if need be, and analyzing unique or large losses to report to line of business director or upper management
  • documenting sub-par underwriting practices and segments for purposes of education and training

Be equipped with:

  • ability and enterprise recognized expertise to interact and influence across functional areas, including Commercial Lines underwriting, staff underwriting, Corporate Communications, Claims and Loss Control
  • at least 5 years of experience in underwriting Commercial auto/garage is preferred
  • ability to work in a collaborative and changing environment
  • good communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization and break down complexities in coverage to a non-expert
  • high degree of ethics and professionalism
  • focused, disciplined and dependable
