Our Commercial Lines department is seeking candidates for a middle markets underwriter trainee class beginning in June 2026. This position is based at our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio.

The pay rate for this position is $31.25 hourly. The hourly pay rate will convert to $65,000 annually upon successful completion of training. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Be ready to:

  • actively participate, learn additional skills, and manage a book of business in partnership with independent insurance agents in a defined geography

Underwriters:

  • manage a defined book of business, serving multiple agencies in a specific geographic area
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of underwriting concepts, lines of coverage and the Cincinnati appetite for risk
  • properly use company and industry resources to underwrite risks on an account level
  • appropriately price renewal accounts and anniversary reviews with consideration given to segmentation, net rate and exposure increase targets;
  • additionally, regarding risk characteristics, agency performance, market conditions and department initiatives; seeking guidance from others to support decisions
  • follow appropriate line of authority with portfolio underwriter or management involvement and adequately prepare for account summary discussions
  • meets department service standards for new business and renewal issuance, respond to inquiries in a timely manner, effectively research and work to solve problems for internal and external customers
  • balance performance goals with profit and growth objectives; begin to learn how to review and analyze data to drive value added decisions regarding price, terms, and conditions
  • build and maintain agency relationships, choosing the appropriate method of communication and negotiating with a win-win strategy
  • travel to visit agencies to further strengthen relationships and communicate company vision
  • build and leverage relationships with Headquarters and field associates to add value to the agency experience and to support company goals
  • seek opportunities to add to your underwriting knowledge by attending all department training classes and reading all written communication

  • work efficiently while following limits of authority and complying with audit criteria

Bring education and experience from:

  • bachelor’s degree

OR

  • have four or more years of insurance-related work experience and have earned an associate in insurance (AINS) designation
