AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC HELPER

General Statement of Duties
This employee helps Automotive Mechanics repair automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus, motorcycles, lawnmowers, and other internal combustion light or heavy duty engines. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge of:
Principles and normal operation of internal combustion engines.Skill to:
Use automotive repair hand tools and basic automotive repair equipment.
Change batteries.
Lubricate vehicles.
Repair tires and tubes.
Drive all types of vehicles.Ability to:
Read parts manuals and service manuals with understanding.
Write legibly and maintain accurate records.
Use a computer to track and log work performed. Required Education and Experience

Each applicant must have one year of paid professional experience in automotive repairs.
Completion of a one-year training course in an automotive trades program may be substituted for one year of experience.
Must have completed 12th grade and have a High School Diploma or have a GED.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Driver's License at the time of appointment.Must obtain a Class A CDL by the end of the probationary period.
Must have a basic set of hand tools or be willing to acquire a set during probationary period.
MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATIONMilitary education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case-by-case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations. Examples of work Performed:

Helps Mechanic to tear down and reassemble motors, transmissions, and differentials; relines brakes.
Helps Mechanic examine and replace worn and broken parts; lubricates motor vehicles.
Makes road service calls to change tires and batteries.May operate a wrecker. May clean broken glass and other debris from roadway after a city vehicle has been in an accident.
Assists Mechanic to maintain and forward repair costs and parts requirements to office and stockroom.
