General Statement of Duties

The City of Cincinnati is recruiting for a CO-OP/INTERN 2 to join the Department of City Planning and Engagement. The candidate will contribute and participate in Short & Long Planning projects, Community Engagement, and interact with outside departments by way of meetings related to zoning, permitting, historic preservation, City Council sessions, and City Planning Commission meetings. These fields may include office level work, deliverables, field work, and/or civic services. Candidates should have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

In order to qualify for the Intern/Co-op/Extern Program, a student must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or a non-citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States
- Individuals under eighteen will require a work permit
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution
- Submit a City job application for employment

- Create, mail and email notices for City Planning Commission meetings
- Write a staff report and create a presentation on an item for the City Planning Commission
- Create maps in ArcGIS
- Analyze Census data
- Assist in the creation of Neighborhood Plan documents, including mapping, data analysis, plan drafting, and engagement
- Work in the Adobe Creative Suite, include applications such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
- Help with the Environmental Review and Coordinated Site Review process
- Participate in a variety of community engagement meetings and events
- Attend sessions of the City Planning Commission, City Council, and a variety of meetings with other departments (zoning, permitting, historic preservation, and others).
Project Descriptions and Deliverables
The CO-OP/INTERN 2 Internship opportunity in the Department of City Planning and Engagement will provide a unique experience to a student interested in learning and mentorship from City Planning and Engagement staff. The student will ultimately be responsible for contributing to the following projects and associated work products.
- Short-Range Planning: The student will have the opportunity to work on planning projects such as zone changes, subdivisions, real estate, and transportation items, and will take at least one item through the City Planning Commission process. The students will prepare and send notices, create maps, write a staff report, and prepare a presentation for the City Planning Commission, in the same way as a full-time planner. In addition, students will help in the Environmental Review and Coordinated Site Review process.
- Long-Range Planning: Students will play a crucial role in assisting in long-range planning projects, especially neighborhood plans. The student will be able to help with mapping, writing, data analysis, research, and using products such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop to help create the plan.
- Community Engagement: Students will be able to participate in the many community engagement sessions conducted by the department, including attending Public Staff Conferences, Community Engagement Meetings, neighborhood plan sessions, and working with the department’s Community Engagement Specialists.
- Experiences with Different City Functions: Students will have the opportunity to work and sit in on meetings outside of the department, including learning about zoning, permitting, historic preservation, City Council sessions, and from other departments.
