General Statement of Duties
This employee performs a wide variety of the more routine semi-skilled tasks as a major part of the job related to the maintenance of buildings, walks, driveways, furniture, equipment, stadium, etc.; uses a wide variety of hand and power tools appropriate for the task. The work performed is normally related to adjustment, repair, replacement, installation, and preventive maintenance functions. In some divisions, specialized activities are performed utilizing the same general skill level. Normally works under close direction on a task initially, but is expected to work progressively independently on a wide variety of the tasks, performing the work in an efficient and skillful manner. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:A wide variety of standard and specialized hand and power tools and equipment used in building construction and maintenance for tasks performed.A wide variety of processes used in maintenance of buildings and grounds for tasks performed; e.g., how to mix concrete, gravel, and sand to a proper consistency; how to complete quarterly routine maintenance forms.Safety policies and procedures, e.g., Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.Skill to:Use a wide variety of common hand and power tools such as cement finishing tools or other standard and specialized toolsDisassemble, assemble, install, troubleshoot, and maintain a variety of items.Use measuring instruments and tools (tapes, plumb line, level, framing square, calipers, compasses.)Erect various types of scaffolding.Use chemicals, spackling, plaster, etc., needed to prepare surfaces for painting.Use paint brushes and rollers.Ability to:Read and work from work orders, sketches, diagrams, and assembly drawings.Analyze routine or simple mechanical problems and to repair tools, equipment, furniture, etc.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Patches defective concrete using bagged and ready-mixed cement: includes up to finishing to grade.Modifies concrete and related tasks: includes drilling and tapping, installing anchors, expansion joints, brackets, fixtures, and structural members.May repair or install asphalt, if necessary, up to raking to grade.Removes paneling, patches surfaces, attaches furring strips, and applies mastic.Replaces precut glass in buildings, greenhouses, and non-building items such as tracing tables: includes measuring and securing.Replaces and installs any tile except terrazzo: includes measuring, cutting, and fitting of tile.Repairs, modifies, and replaces parts and whole assemblies of door knobs and lock cylinders: includes adjusting locks, replacing lock cylinders, disassembling, and replacing tumblers.Maintains the flow of water and wastewater in sinks, toilets, etc.: includes checking for leaks and reporting them and the use of plungers, drill rotors, pumps, and rotor rooters.Paints existing doors, windows, walls, sheds etc., and miscellaneous items with premixed paint: includes surface preparation such as scraping, sanding, removing coverings, applying sealer and sizing, patching, removing hardware; finishes to acceptable standards by trimming, installing hardware, etc.Repairs, modifies, and replaces parts and whole assemblies of metal items such as hand and guard rails, playground equipment, gutters, framework, etc., using necessary hand and power tools, arc and acetylene welders, soldering irons metal benders, pipe threaders, etc.Repairs, modifies, replaces parts and whole assemblies of wood items such as hand and guard rails, ladders, playground equipment, and framework.Repairs, modifies, and replaces parts and whole assemblies of tools and specialized equipment: includes file cabinets, leather and plastic items, fire hose nozzles and adapters, etc., by disassembling, reassembling taping, sewing, grinding, etc.Performs routine preventive maintenance on fans, motors, air conditioning compressors, evaporators, pumps, etc.: includes monthly, quarterly or annual inspecting; cleaning, oiling, greasing, starting, adjusting, disassembling, and reassembling.Working knowledge of current safety policies, instructions for proper usage, and other procedures and professional practices required for completing job duties.
Identifies unsafe practices and conditions and brings such to the attention of the crew leader or supervisor.Replaces and installs heating tape, outlets, switch parts, contacts for air conditioners, and replaces bulbs for field lights, HID lights, and others with extremely difficult access.Trips circuit breakers, replaces fuses, starts and stops equipment, and participates in similar building operations.Assists electrical workers with pulling wire, putting up straps, taking readings on meters, and installing equipment. Each applicant must have one year of experience performing or assisting with building maintenance tasks such as working with concrete, basic plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation or air conditioning maintenance, etc
OTHER REQUIREMENTSMust have a valid Driver's License.Must possess good physical condition to permit working at heights, depths, and in confined places (stadium roof, ladders, water tower, etc.) and to apply pressure (drill holes in concrete, etc.), lift cement, etc.
MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATIONMilitary education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
ADDITIONAL EXAM INFORMATION:
Exam Scoring: The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Civil Service Secretary. Determination of passing score will be based on the job analysis and the examination results in consultation with subject matter experts and/or other professional methods.
Credit for Military Service: Special credit for honorable military service is given (1) who successfully complete all portions of the testing process, and (2) who provide Human Resources a long-form copy of your DD-214 confirming an honorable discharge (Character of Service Box 24 on DD-214). Disabled veterans shall receive ten preference points and non-disabled veterans shall receive five preference points. Veteran's points will be added only to passing scores.
Background Investigation: A criminal background investigation will be conducted for this position (according to Civil Service Commission Rule 15 – Sensitive Classifications/Positions and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act of 2001 and the Patriot Act). The purpose is to detect security risks and prevent security threats posed by potential employees.
