The Metropolitan Sewer District posted a number of College Co-Op Job Postings for the Spring Semester beginning May 11, 2026. Please read through all Job Postings and apply for the position(s) you would like to be evaluated for and/or interviewed for as a Co-Op student.

Applications submitted by this date will be reviewed by MSD hiring managers before the posting closes on April 04, 2026. Interns/Co-ops/Externs for the City of Cincinnati may be performing duties in any potential field within the City's structure. These fields may include office-level work/assignments, fieldwork, and/or civic services. The nature of the work will be based on areas of interest, degree programs, or organizational needs. Candidates should have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

MSD WASTEWATER ENGINEERING DIVISION - PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Mission:Provide planning, design, and project management support to project managers and supervising engineers in the Project Management branch, with emphasis on supporting the Project Managers. Learn aspects of project management by assisting with GIS map development, assist in review of invoices charged to MSD projects, assist in review of construction submittals, develop mailing lists and communications for public communications, and attend training related to civil and environmental engineering. Visit active construction sites to see application of project plans and associated documentation and observe testing under the supervision of an engineer or construction inspector.
Provide support to tap permits, plan review, utility review and local sewer assessment program in Development Services section. Candidate will assist with issuing permits for sewer-related construction, reviewing sanitary sewer designs, supporting sewer extension projects, and aiding in the development of internal processes to enhance program delivery.
Purpose:Gain experience in and understand government public service while providing design and project management support to Project Managers. Provide assistance with a variety of tasks related to planning, design, and construction of sewers, pump stations, detention basins, and other conveyance-related items. Candidates will be occasionally in the field for observation, and document sewer testing results.
Gain experience and knowledge related to the fast-paced environment of private/public development within MSD’s service area. Candidates will use best engineering judgement to troubleshoot development-related impacts on the public sewer system. Work involves close coordination with engineering (planning, design, inspections, GIS, records, surveying, and etc.), and operations to ensure consistency and clear communication between all parties with different areas of responsibility.
Overview:
Be an effective member in a multi-disciplinary team assisting teammates in a professional working environment. Develop communication skills. Learn about project management, specifically planning, design, property acquisition, and construction of various projects. Learn about civil engineering, especially wastewater treatment, sewer design and project management. Assume responsibility for your actions and act in an ethical manner.
Expectations:
Learn the basics of: GIS, MSD rules and regulations, engineering design standards, construction standards, stormwater detention, permitting, assessment sewer planning and concept level design, project legislation, in-house design, construction cost estimation, and customer service. Utilize various software platforms to prepare project exhibits. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability as workflow changes.

Co-Op Learning Milestones:- Basic understanding of AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Basic understanding of gravity sanitary sewer planning, design, and construction
- Basic understanding of the legislative process for assessment sewer projects
- Basic understanding on project and construction budgets
- Basic understanding of MSD GIS
- Basic understanding of MSD’s organizational structure and responsibilities
Education:- AutoCAD and/or GIS experience beneficial but not necessary
- Completed two semesters of undergraduate coursework
- Basic understanding of MS Office

In order to qualify for the Intern/Co-op Program, a student must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or a non-citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States
- Individuals under eighteen will require a work permit
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution and have completed 2 semesters of undergraduate coursework
- Have a basic understanding of MS Office
- Submit a City job application for employment
