Interns/Co-ops/Externs for the City of Cincinnati may be performing duties in any potential field within the City's structure. MSD DIVISION OF COMPLIANCE SERVICES - INDUSTRIAL WASTE
Mission: To establish a partnership with colleges and universities, exposing as many students as possible to employment opportunities in the Wastewater Industry and help them become experienced professionals in the next generation workforce.
Purpose:To attract and cultivate bright and energetic college students and maintain ongoing partnerships with colleges and universities. It is our goal to expose these students to our Industrial Customers as well as career opportunities in water resource management and the environmental sciences. The Co-op program also serves as a recruitment tool to assist the Compliance Services Division (CSD) Industrial Waste Group in hiring full-time personnel.
Overview:The Co-op student will be assigned to work with the Industrial Waste Section Leads on MSD’s auxiliary meter program, FOG program, etc. During the Co-op, the student will be building/managing the database of Industrial Users within the District, conducting Annual and Focused inspections, and basic report writing. Sampling may be conducted daily by certain Co-op staff. The Co-op may also manage the Map separation project. The candidate will be under the direct supervision of an Environmental Safety Specialist. Co-op students will be exposed to various day-to-day tasks performed in the Industrial Waste Section, as well as working on special projects. The CSD Industrial Waste Section strives to reinforce the knowledge and skills the students have learned in the classroom and to build on those skills in a setting that provides “hands on” experience with a specific project.
Learning Expectations and Deliverables:The Co-op students will be assigned to work with the Industrial Waste Section Environmental Safety Specialists, Inspectors, or Pretreatment Specialists. They will be performing a variety of functions - combining databases, identifying any shortcomings in the programs, brainstorming solutions and auditing records. This will involve office work and field work. The Co-op student will be trained on the iPACs database, CagisDocs system, and GIS system.
Deliverables -- Budget:
- Salary of student; student is tentatively scheduled to work from May through August.
- Supervisory staff time.
- Logistics:
- Student will be located in the MSD/CSD building, 1st floor. The Co-op student will drive a city vehicle to conduct inspections.
- Training:
- Training: The student will be trained in Industrial Waste Section policies and procedures. The student is expected to have basic computer and filing skills; however, MSD personnel will provide instruction on proprietary databases.

- Industrial Waste Group Orientation. (week 1)
- Work on Project (weeks 2 through 11)
- Completion of project/report out. (week 12)
Education:
- The student must have a valid Driver’s license.
- The student should have but not ultimately required to have a background in business administration, accounting, communications, environmental science or engineering.
- In addition to their primary project, students will be expected to perform other industrial waste tasks and help in other areas as assistance is needed.

- Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or a non-citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States
- Individuals under eighteen will require a work permit
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution
- Submit a City job application for employment
- Must pass a drug screen and background check
