General Statement of Duties

This Clerk Typist 3 (Unclassified) position is housed within the Department of Opportunity and Resident Services (DORS).


This Clerk Typist 3 (Unclassified) assignment is available within the Opportunity Division (Homeownership Support). Please be aware that assignments may change depending on Departmental need.

The focus of DORS is "Creating economic opportunity and economic empowerment for City residents, particularly residents in need or that have been historically disadvantaged, by providing services to homeowners, tenants, small business owners and entrepreneurs, as well as residents experiencing homelessness."

Some areas of focus include:
  • Workforce and small business support
  • Homeownership and renter support
  • Homelessness
  • Human services

This unclassified employee is responsible for performing varied complex clerical duties such as typing, record keeping, proofreading, editing, writing, coordinating, and dealing with the public; generally, works independently and is responsible for planning and organizing own work. Performs related duties as required. Unclassified employees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and report to the director/appointing authority.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge of:
Basic business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Standard office methods and practices.
Basic math.
Methods for formatting documents using word processing software.
Microsoft Office Suite applications or similar productivity/professional software

Skill to:
Develop various forms of correspondence in a timely manner.
Develop final copies of reports, letters, and tables from longhand or a rough draft copy.
Operate a, word processor, or laptop/iPad/tablet/personal computer.

Ability to:
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Plan and organize own work.
Make corrections to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format errors.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
Maintain confidentiality.


Examples of Work Performed:

Formats and creates correspondence, reports, and technical/legal documents using a standard word processor/personal computer; formats documents using word processing software.
Makes corrections to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format errors when typing; also edits materials written by others.
Proofreads for typographical errors as well as errors in English usage, spelling, punctuation, and format.
Answers phone calls and greets visitors, taking messages, answering questions and complaints.
Copies, collates and addresses material for mailing and routing; also receives, opens, and routes incoming mail.
Files and retrieves information from files (physical and electronic storage); classifies materials for filing, establishing new file categories when appropriate.
Estimates supply and equipment needs; handles the distribution of office supplies and equipment.
Researches information needed for projects and reports.
Writes responses to inquiries received by the work unit; selects and sends appropriate form letters.


Required Education and Experience

Each applicant must have three years of paid work experience in complex clerical duties such as typing, record keeping, proofreading, editing, writing, coordinating, and dealing with the public.

Additionally each applicant must have a High School diploma or G.E.D.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS
In some positions, must have a valid Driver's License.
In some positions, must be willing to work irregular hours.
MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION
Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
