CLASS SUMMARY:

Responsible for skilled repair and maintenance work on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including heavy construction equipment, snow removal equipment, aircraft crash trucks and fire and police vehicles with onboard computer systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.

  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs brake systems including ABS.
  • Maintains records of repairs made, parts, and time worked.
  • Makes emergency repairs out of the shop in all elements of weather.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical and electronic systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains specialized snow and fire and police equipment.
  • Operate and inspect all vehicles and equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Troubleshoot and repair A/C components on all vehicles and equipment.
  • Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacture’s specifications.
  • Repair and/or replace damaged or worn parts.
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoist, cranes, and hand tools.
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Overhaul and test equipment to ensure proper operations and efficiency.
  • Assemble gear systems.
  • Adjust and maintain, and repair or replace, subassemblies, such as transmissions and differential assemblies.
  • Responds to airport emergencies as needed. Operates all snow equipment and communicates on the airfield and with co-workers in high stress situations.
  • Forklift and various types of heavy equipment operation.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Degree or GED and five years' experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment including strong experience working on large diesel vehicles/equipment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Commercial Driver’s License – Class A (or the ability to acquire a Class A within 6 months of the hire date)
  • Security Identification Display Area Clearance (SIDA)
  • Obtain and Maintain Ramp and Movement Area driving privileges
  • Valid Driver’s license

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines.
  • Diesel engines, including fuel rail systems.
  • Wide variety of hand and power tools.
  • OSHA Standards, Airfield and FAA Regulations.

SKILL IN:

  • Use of a variety of computer-based technologies including word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Establish and maintain effective, fair, cooperative, collaborative, and respectful relationships with internal and external colleagues, peers, work teams and workgroups.
  • Demonstrated skill in the diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
