Position Summary:
This position, under the direction of the Facilities Director and delegated supervision of the Maintenance Lead, conducts all cleaning, stocking or materials and supplies and responds to all custodial calls for facilities and grounds. The custodian cleans all rooms, common areas, offices, and restrooms; performs floor care and maintenance and assists the maintenance staff with buildings and grounds needs as required. This position maintains, in good clean condition, all areas of ESRW; providing a safe, clean, comfortable, and well-functioning facility to fulfill the needs of the organization; employees, clients and our visitors. This position will lead other custodians in their daily duties and monitor supply inventory.

Essential and Primary Responsibilities:
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors in all common areas, program rooms, offices and restrooms daily or as assigned. Monitor outside areas for trash.
  • Skills and abilities must include professional floor care and safe and adequate use of floor polishing and stripping equipment.
  • May be required to close the building, including turning off lights, adjustment of heat/air conditioning, closing of windows and doors, and activation of the security system.
  • Removes all waste and trash from all areas daily or as assigned/scheduled.
  • Comply with OSHA standards, ESRW policy and procedures, and local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, objects, and waste.
  • On snow days, maintain, shovel, and apply ice melting substance to doorways, parking area, walkways, and driveways as needed--in conjunction with outside snow removal service.
  • Assist Facilities staff, as needed/directed, to maintain buildings and grounds to ensure we provide a well maintained, safe, clean and attractive environment.
  • Report to Facilities Director or Facilities Lead any damage to facility, grounds or equipment noted.
  • Assist in moving furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities as directed by the Facilities Director or Facilities Lead.
  • Perform loading/unloading of supplies and materials; transport and stock supplies in maintenance closets.
  • Keep all maintenance closets neat, clean and organized.
  • Clean and check/service scrubber, burnisher, tools and equipment before and after each use.
  • Make certain all tools and equipment are stored properly; clean and ready for next use.
  • Wash, dry and restock mop heads daily/as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with facilities staff and outside service contractors as deemed necessary by the Facilities Director or Facilities Lead.
  • Be familiar with and follow written policies, procedures, work orders, and directions as related to job responsibilities.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly environment, throughout the day, including compliance with all safety and health regulations.
  • Perform other duties (special projects) as assigned.

Minimum education and experience required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum one-year janitorial experience preferred.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is typically performed anywhere in the facility or on the grounds, including occasionally on top of the building, as well as in the community when completing offsite duties. ESRW’s building is climate controlled with standard lighting. Noise levels vary based on the location of work, varying from soft to loud, but typically moderate. When conducting duties outside of the building, lighting, temperature, and noise levels reflect seasonal conditions or vary based on the site.
  • There is periodic exposure to hazardous chemicals with some exposure to contagious conditions, such as the common cold and body fluids. Individuals served in the facility may display disruptive behavior. While normal work hours are typical, this position may be required to respond to an emergency facility need during nonworking hours or in overseeing work crews or volunteers.

Physical Demands:
  • In the role the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. These essential functions require visual/hearing acuity, sufficient strength and the ability to bend, reach, grasp, manipulate objects, pull/push, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, and lift and and/or carry 50 pounds or exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 100 pounds of force occasionally to move objects, with or without the use of adaptive equipment.
