Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

This leadership position is accountable for the medical-administrative and medico-legal aspects of the Market Medical Staff organizations. Works in consultation with the Market Chief Clinical Officer, is an essential link between the Board of Trustees, senior management, market hospital staffs and the Market Medical Staffs to promote and enhance good communications and a positive working relationship. The Director is responsible for establishing, contributing and maintaining continuity in the planning, development and implementation of standards applicable to Medical Staff members relating to credentialing, quality and administrative functions.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides direction to members of the medical staff, hospital leadership, and medical staff leadership in analyzing and resolving complex issues. Independently intervenes to facilitate efficient and effective resolutions to foster positive physician relations

  • Collaborates with Market Chief Clinical Officer to provide support to hospital departments

  • Researches projects for the Market Chief Clinical Officer and develops proposals and plans of action for implementation

  • Represents Markets Chief Clinical Officer on various committees, internal and external, when requested

  • Works with community and regional network organizations in the development and implementation of centralized credentialing, medical staff leadership programs, and similar projects focusing on the needs of medical staff organizations. In conjunction with the Market Chief Clinical Officer, develops and implements community resident credentialing programs

  • Collaborates with the Provider Physician Relation Managers, develops and implements programs to foster positive physician relations and recruitment efforts, including such projects as the new medical staff member orientation program

  • Facilitates communication along medical staff members; organizes special events for the medical staff

  • Oversees development of a database for efficient maintenance of individual credentials files through a computerized profiling system

  • Prepares agendas and supporting materials for Medical Executive Committee and Quarterly Staff Meetings, in collaboration with the Chief of Staff

  • Attends medical staff and medical committee meetings, in some instances as an ex-officio member

  • Directs and oversees activities of Medical Staff Services Department, assigning duties as appropriate

  • Trends, monitors, evaluates and analyzes the quality and appropriateness of services provided by the department. Initiates action plan for correction, as necessary

  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures and develops department budget and planning programs for the Department

  • Maintains working knowledge of medical staff Constitution, policies, rules and regulations, and initiates the development of appropriately worded amendments for approval by the medical staff. Interprets laws, policies and regulations for the benefit of medical and hospital staff alike

  • Identifies and works to resolve matters of legal concern relative to the medical staff and the Medical Executive Committee and relays information to staff attorney and risk manager

  • Oversees and managers the Manager of CME and applicable programs, including ensuring that all activities are planned and presented in compliance with the accreditation requirements and policies of all regulatory bodies including, but not limited to, the American Medical Association, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Ohio State Medical Association. Stays abreast of all updates to the above accreditation requirements and bodies

  • Oversees documentation of monitoring activities and administrative functions of the medical staff organization through recording/follow-through on all recommendations, channeling actions from one body to another

Licensing/Certification

Certification by the National Association of Medical Staff Services (required)

Education

Bachelor’s Degree Business or related field (required)

Master's Degree Business or related field (preferred)

Work Experience

7 years' experience medical staff services (required)
