The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) key responsibility is to collect and submit accurate, complete, and timely data to the MBSAQIP Registry. This task is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, documentation, and entry of 100% of metabolic and bariatric procedures performed at Mercy Lorain Hospital into the MBSAQIP Data Registry Platform in a timely manner. This person will identify process improvement opportunities in the data collection process and will work closely with metabolic & bariatric and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified.

Essential Functions

  • Identifies 100 percent of metabolic and bariatric patients for inclusion in the MBSAQIP Registry.

  • Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the program.

  • Must participate in bariatric program meetings and teleconferences. (MBS Committee Meetings are required)

  • Must be able to interpret and present data collected upon request and during MBS Committee Meetings.

  • Must actively participate in data compiling for audits and (re)accreditation or site visits and assist coordinator as needed.

  • Manages Accreditation criteria to ensure bariatric program meets expectations set forth by MBSAQIP.

  • Works closely and directly with the MBS (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) Coordinator.

  • The MBSCR works closely with the members of the metabolic and bariatric surgery team to review SAR to identify, track, and implement quality improvement projects based on SAR outcomes.

  • Independently manages workflows to, as requested, meet established deadlines and performs abstraction and data entry to meet identified deadlines for successful submission of data to MBSAQIP Registry.

  • Consistently completes targeted clinical case reviews utilizing clinical decision making, critical thinking, and objectivity.

  • Actively participates/coordinates committees, task forces, and in work groups as needed/requested.

  • Collects preoperative, intraoperative, 30-day postoperative, and long-term (six month and annual thereafter) follow-up data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through a coordinated effort with individual surgeon office staff.

  • Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process in collaboration with the entire bariatric surgery team.

  • The MBSCR may need to fulfill request for outcomes data and report to the MBS Committee and other appropriate personnel.

  • This role encounters Protected Health Information (PHI) as part of regular responsibilities. Mercy Health employees must abide by all requirements to maintain PHI safely and securely for our patients. Annual training, Mercy Health Code of Conduct and Mercy Health policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and disease process is required.

  • Minimum one year experience in a hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, data registry, or medical records.

  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred.

  • Computer and internet experience required.

  • Knowledge and comfort with Microsoft Office products are essential.

  • Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred.

  • Basic or intermediate statistical knowledge preferred.

EDUCATION:

Graduate from accredited School of Nursing.

Current RN license in State of Ohio.

EXPERIENCE:

Three years medical –surgical experience.
