Job Description

As a Principal Engineer, your mission is to help lead our team of innovators and technologists toward creating next-level solutions that improve the way our business is run. Your deep knowledge of design, analytics, development, coding, testing and application programming will help your team raise their game, meeting your standards, as well as satisfying both business and functional requirements. Your expertise in various technology domains will be counted on to set strategic direction and solve complex and mission critical problems, internally and externally. Your quest to embracing leading-edge technologies and methodologies inspires your team to follow suit. And best of all, you’ll be able to harness massive amounts of brainpower through our global network of technologists from around the world. You will execute true end-to-end development and testing of software products in an agile lifecycle. Partnering with key technical and business stakeholders, the agile developer will help refine the product vision, estimate, and design a solution, create, purchase, or customize the requisite hardware and software to create the solution, ensure the quality of the final product through manual and automated tests, and support the new software as it is moved to production.

The Principal Engineer is a generalist that combines aspects of a traditional developer and tester into a single position responsible for the design and release of quality code in short, releasable, and iterative increments. It is critical for the Principal Software Engineer to have not only the technical skills relative to development and testing, but strong collaboration and communication skills to support the entire agile scrum team. You will guide other engineers through empathy, as well as the ability to demonstrate and prototype sound technical solutions rapidly that add business value.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides high-level architectural guidance and assists the team in aligning architecture to business requirements.

  • Works across the organization to foster a culture of applying applicable and relevant design patterns, in accordance with the needs of the company and guides the teams in the organization in anticipation of future use cases.

  • Works across the organization to foster a culture of architecture that allows for iterative, autonomous development and future scaling.

  • Guides teams in the organization in anticipation of future use cases and helps them make design decisions that minimize the cost of future changes.

  • Sets the direction of the architectural roadmap.

  • Determines the Return-on-Investment for specific engineering initiatives and determines appropriate levels of investment for given strategic horizons.

  • Establishes engineering strategic objectives that drive architecture and technical approach.

  • Coaches the engineering organization on a debugging mindset with a view of using the appropriate tools for specific needs.

  • Leads incident response across the engineering organization as needed.

  • Uses systematic debugging to diagnose issues across the organization.

  • Selects and procures tools and establishes processes to support the team in effective troubleshooting.

  • Drives and sets the culture of quality and timely code reviews across the organization while encouraging teams to consider release complications.

  • Provides guidance on reviews conducted by others.

  • Champions the engineering organization with an ability to understand and deliver to real user needs.

  • Drives the organizational testing strategy and uses quality metrics to identify gaps.

  • Works with all teams to recommend solutions that are in accordance with accepted testing frameworks and the testing pyramid.

  • Guides the teams on following standards and aims for best practice across the organization.

  • Works to keep skills up to date to aid in decision making, coaching and facilitation.

  • Actively works with the security team to set and refine organization-wide security strategy.

  • Fosters a security first mindset across the organization.

  • Drives security awareness and culture across the organization.

  • Takes ownership of decisions made in the engineering organization by helping teams make clear decisions in alignment with enterprise goals, backing decisions made, and taking responsibility for their success.

  • Ensures accountability is practiced throughout the organization.

  • Sets the direction of the delivery process across the organization, on the importance and purpose of the methodology, and has a clear point of view and guides the organization on improvements to the delivery process.

  • Promotes a culture amongst engineering of delivering features with minimal disruption to production.

  • Responsible for executing product roadmap on-time and within budget and ensures security and relevant compliance of core systems.

  • Ensures expectations across the organization and external stakeholders are clarified between all parties involved.

  • Identifies dependencies across the organization and works with individual teams to resolve them before they become an issue and installs preventative measures to mitigate repeat occurrences.

  • Works across the organization to foster a culture of priority setting and urgency in alignment with organizational strategy.

  • Coaches the team on making trade-offs, prioritization and managing technical debt. Identifies and manages technical and business risk.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to influence a cross functional team to obtain desired results, initiate new efforts through iterative design and drive the engineering teams to completion.

  • Strong communication/leadership skills.

  • Extensive knowledge in modeling and application design and architecture.

  • Extensive programming knowledge (Golang preferred).

  • Has basic knowledge in a wide variety of technologies and skill sets with deep expertise in a few specific areas.

  • Knowledge in IT/Software quality assurance, system testing tools and system/application testing and implementation.

  • Experience in multiple types of testing, including but not limited to Unit, Functional, Performance, End to End (including automation and integration with CI systems) and Agile Software Development (typically Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).

  • Open, honest, collaborative, and clear intra-team communication skills.

  • Entirely self-directed, can solve business problems from inception to implementation– can solve business problems without explicit direction.

  • Creative, flexible, and willing to continuously change, evolve, and improve software development processes.

  • Strong understanding of system and network architecture.

  • Expertise in implementing micro services (using tools and technologies for messaging, RPC, containerization, etc.).

  • Experience working with SQL/NoSQL databases, ability to write complex queries and optimize them.

  • Understanding of containerization technologies (Docker, RKT, Kubernetes, etc.)

  • Extensive experience with CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitLab, GitHub, SVN, ADO, etc.)

  • Extensive experience working with AWS/Google, Cloud/Azure.

  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Leads by example; providing support and mentoring as needed to ensure sufficient skill, knowledge and effectiveness in the development and testing process.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and direction.

  • Demonstrated enterprise-level collaboration and product design.

  • Demonstrated mentorship of peers in technical and business topics.

  • Called upon to diagnose and solve unexpected, high priority production issues with critical customer impact.

  • Participates in key stakeholder decisions and technical direction, including architecture, system design, and processes / standards.

  • Clear leader in the most complex and broadest scope technical and business topics

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

  • At least 8 years’ experience with developing and implementing applications.

  • At least 3 years’ experience with the concepts, philosophies, and tools behind the design of applications, information, and underlying information technologies.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Strongly influences enterprise decisions and technical direction, including architecture, system design, and processes / standards.

  • Frequently presents to senior management and other key senior stakeholders.

  • Sets strategy and leads deployment for continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and tools.

  • Ability to analyze features to deliver solutions that meet business needs.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, US Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401k contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $145,180.00 - $170,800.00 - $187,880.00
