Student Lab Technician, Second Shift, Core Lab Department

UC Health is hiring a part-time Student Lab Technician for the core lab department for second shift at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The Student Lab Technician performs waived and moderately complex lab testing, technical support duties, pre-analytical processing of specimens, accessions, labels, and distributes specimens, and performs clerical support duties.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities

  • The Student Lab Tech engages in population appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms.
  • Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Performs waived and moderately complex testing as defined by CLIA.
  • Performs and reports testing according to established protocols, including evaluation of specimen acceptability.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment within the scope of training including routine preventive maintenance, reagent preparation, calibrations, and safety checks.
  • Keeps appropriate persons informed of instrument problems.
  • Completes all mandatory competencies and training modules and regular review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs and records all quality control procedures.
  • Evaluates the results of quality control and implements corrective action within scope of training.
  • Recognizes instrument and equipment malfunctions. Keeps appropriate persons informed of problems and issues.
  • Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture or skin puncture within scope of training and demonstrated competency.
  • Competently accessions, triages, and processes specimens in preparation for testing and transit. Appropriately centrifuges and aliquots samples.
  • Performs clerical support duties necessary to assure the efficient running of the laboratory section, including the processing of add-on requests and handling of phone requests.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Current enrollment in an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Program required
