The Histology Supervisor is a supervisory role that works with Pathology Leadership to oversee the daily operations of Surgical Pathology providing oversight of the Histotechnicians, as well as assistance to Surgical Pathology attending associates and residents in the areas of staff education and training, and performing of routine histopathological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Responsibilities

PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY):

Engages in population appropriate communication.

Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.

Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.

Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.

Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.

Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.

Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.

Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.

Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.

Direction of the Histotechnicians including scheduling, time reporting, annual evaluations and discipline.

Responsible for the enforcement of UC Health and UC Physician policies and procedures as that relate to staff and safety.

Pathology representative at internal and external meetings as required.

Work with Quality Assurance Director to implement programs and collect data.

Assist in ensuring staff compliance with training, certification, competency assessment and proficiency testing.

Responsible for lab supply ordering and inventory maintenance.

Serve as a technical resource for Pathology and external vendors; including instrument set-up and implementation, and assay validation. Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel, as well as train other Histotechnicians to be technical resources.

Continue to function as needed in the role of Histotechnologist or Histotechnician:

Perform muscle biopsies, histochemical and other histopathological laboratory tests and examinations to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; record determinations and results for review by physicians.

Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, complex special staining and mounting tissue; label, record and prepare slides of tissue to the pathologist for microscopic examination and diagnosis; obtain specimens from operating rooms and record in log book; perform frozen cryostat sectioning as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Required: Bachelor's Degree in Science or related field. | ASCP certified as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician required. | A minimum of 5 years required.
