Polysomnographer, Full-Time, Third Shift, Sleep Lab
UC Health is hiring a full-time Polysomnographer Educator for the sleep lab's department for the third shift at UC Holmes and West Chester.
The Polysomnographer Educator is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering educational training program and training for sleep technologists, students, and clinical staff. This role ensures that all personnel involved in sleep diagnostics and therapy are trained in accordance with current guidelines, best practices, and accreditation standards. The educator serves as a mentor and leader in advancing clinical competencies and professional development in sleep medicine. This position will also be responsible for conducting in-lab sleep studies outside of staff education.
Responsibilities
Patient Population
- Communicates effectively with patients and families in a population-appropriate manner, providing clear instructions and involving family/guardians in assessment, treatment, and ongoing care.
- Demonstrates knowledge of developmental milestones and interprets population-specific data to plan appropriate care.
- Identifies and addresses physical limitations, behavioral health concerns, and signs of abuse or neglect.
- Delivers care that respects psychological, religious, and cultural needs.
- Administers treatments, medications, and operates equipment safely.
Education of Staff
- Develops and implements onboarding and continuing education programs for polysomnographic technologists, ensuring alignment with AASM, BRPT, and CoARC standards.
- Provides hands-on instruction in sleep study procedures, scoring, and PAP titration, along with real-time coaching and feedback.
- Prepares and maintains educational materials, manuals, and resources; coordinates in-services, workshops, and simulation labs.
- Conducts ongoing learning needs assessments and bi-annual competency evaluations, with written reviews and recommendations.
- Tracks staff competencies and learning outcomes; develops tools and trains the education team for high-risk, low-volume situations.
- Maintains certification and continuing education in sleep technology; stays current with industry policies and trends.
- Maintains a resource database of educational opportunities and serves as a resource for staff utilizing Education Leave benefits.
- Collaborates with other departments and leadership on education initiatives and uses direct patient care situations as teaching opportunities.
Clinical Practice
- Conducts in-lab sleep studies, prepares patients by explaining procedures, attaching sensors, and ensuring comfort and safety.
- Monitors sleep patterns, vital signs, and patient responses, making real-time adjustments as needed.
- Accurately records and documents data (EEG, EKG, EOG, EMG, respiratory parameters), maintains organized patient records, and compiles nightly/hourly reports.
- Troubleshoots equipment issues, scoring discrepancies, and protocol questions.
- Supports quality assurance by identifying performance improvement areas and contributes to policy and procedure development.
- Promotes continuity of care through collaboration with interdisciplinary teams including medical, respiratory, nursing, and sleep clinic staff.
- Acts as a role model in delivering high-quality patient care and contributes to research, quality improvement, and publications.
- Assists with department-specific disaster preparedness and collaborates with management on quality, performance improvement, and patient safety.
Qualifications
Education and Requirements
- High school diploma required, Preferred: Associate degree or Higher.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications: Required registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologies (BRPT) as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or by the American Board of Sleep Medicine as a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST).
- Preferred: Credentialed as a Sleep Educator or Clinical Educator (CSE or CCSH)
- Minimum Required: 3-5 years experience.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Ability to perform accurate hookups and acquire artifact-free polysomnographic recordings.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with computers.
