Job Summary:
Our client is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Sales and Use Tax Accountant for a contract assignment. The Sales and Use Tax Accountant will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely filing of sales and use tax returns and managing compliance with state and local tax laws. This role requires a thorough understanding of sales and use tax regulations and the ability to analyze data to support tax reporting and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tax Return Preparation and Filing:
Prepare, review, and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable tax regulations. - Tax Compliance and Research:
Maintain a deep understanding of sales and use tax laws and regulations. Monitor changes in tax laws, perform research on tax-related matters, and ensure the company’s compliance with state and local sales tax laws. - Sales and Use Tax Audits:
Manage state and local sales tax audits, gather documentation, and respond to auditor inquiries. Work with internal teams to ensure accurate and complete data is provided for audit defense. - Tax Exemptions and Certificates Management:
Manage and maintain sales tax exemption certificates and ensure they are properly recorded in the system to avoid unnecessary tax assessments. - Reconciliation and Analysis:
Reconcile sales and use tax accounts monthly, investigate discrepancies, and work with the finance and accounting teams to resolve any issues. Conduct tax liability analyses and report findings to management. - Process Improvement:
Continuously review and enhance the company’s sales and use tax compliance processes to improve accuracy and efficiency. Collaborate with IT and other departments to implement system updates or improvements as needed. - Tax Technology & Systems:
Ensure that the company’s tax software and ERP systems are properly set up to calculate sales and use tax correctly on customer invoices and purchases. Assist in system upgrades and implementations as related to sales tax.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 2-4 years of experience in sales and use tax accounting or a related tax role.
- In-depth knowledge of sales and use tax regulations across multiple states and jurisdictions.
- Experience with tax software (e.g., Vertex, Avalara) and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards) is preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
