Job Description
Responsible for managing and overseeing the financial activities within a project. This role ensures accurate accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. The Construction Accountant collaborates with project managers, contractors, and finance teams to track project costs, process invoices, and maintain financial records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Track and report on project costs and ensure expenses are within budget.
- Review, reconcile, and maintain general ledger accounts and project-based financial records.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in creating project budgets and financial forecasts.
- Track changes in project scope and assess their financial impact.
- Provide ongoing budget updates and recommendations to project managers and senior leadership.
- Process and verify invoices related to construction projects (e.g., contractor payments, material costs).
- Manage subcontractor payment processes and resolve any discrepancies
- Ensure accurate billing and timely collection of payments from clients.
- Monitor labor, material, and equipment costs to ensure project costs are within budget.
- Conduct detailed cost analysis to identify areas for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
- Maintain and update job cost records regularly, ensuring accurate allocation of costs to specific projects.
- Review contracts to ensure financial terms are met and adhered to.
- Communicate with vendors and subcontractors regarding payment terms, invoicing, and contractual obligations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
- Proven experience as an accountant in the construction industry or similar field.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles and practices.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Procore, Viewpoint) and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of industry-specific tax regulations, including sales tax and labor laws.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
