Interim Controller

Our client, a construction and engineering firm located in the Bay Area, is seeking an Interim Controller to support their finance and accounting team through a critical transition. The role will focus on the implementation of a new accounting system and maintaining financial reporting integrity during this time. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with senior leadership and a dedicated accounting team to ensure operational accuracy and efficiency. The position is on-site in Pleasanton, CA.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and finalize the implementation of the new accounting system, ensuring effective use of training materials and processes.
• Assist in monthly financial close, reconciliations, and reporting.
• Work closely with an external CPA firm to support year-end audit requests and mid-year reviews.
• Ensure accurate job cost accounting and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reconciliations.
• Provide guidance on billing rate setups and invoicing processes.
• Assist with union payroll processing and vendor inquiries.
• Support time & material billings and progress billings, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Lead and provide guidance to a small accounting team.
• Handle ad hoc financial analysis, reporting, or process improvements as needed.

Requirements

• 10 years of accounting/finance experience, preferably in the construction or engineering industry.
• Strong knowledge of percentage-of-completion accounting and WIP reconciliation.
• Experience with construction project-based accounting and joint ventures is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in accounting software (experience with Spectrum ERP preferred but not required), Sage 100, Excel, SQL, and Crystal Reports is a plus.
